DSF Refractories & Minerals Ltd

At DSF we pride ourselves as one of the largest employers in the heart of the Peak District. We employ about 150 people, many of which live in the local villages and towns. Over the 125 years we have seen many family generations spending their working lives at DSF through to retirement. This is reflected in our history of long service awards of 25, 40 and 50 years celebrations.

Job Description:

DSF Refractories & Minerals Ltd is seeking a SHEQ Apprentice

Responsible to the Health and Safety Officer at our factory at Friden, Newhaven, Buxton

Working a 39 hour a week contract. Typically, Monday to Thursday, 7.30am to 4.30pm, Friday 7.30am to 12.30pm.

But hours may change to suit the needs of the business.

To undertake an apprenticeship as a Safety, Health, Environment quality adviser leading to a nationally recognised qualification and accreditation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality standards are met on-site.
  • Identifying potential hazards.
  • Completing risk assessments and site inspections.
  • Suggesting improvement to working processes.
  • Ensuring staff understand safety procedures.
  • Checking equipment is safe.
  • Compiling statistics for reports and presentations.
  • Monitoring environmental impacts.
  • Developing and reviewing safety policies and procedures.
  • Advising and training staff on best working practices.
  • Liaising with inspectors.


  • Highly numerate and literate, with a working knowledge of spreadsheets and databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship building and team working skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Persistence and determination.

Development Technologist

We are currently seeking a Development Technologist at our Friden, Derbyshire factory

We are seeking people with the talent and determination to move the company forward through innovative products. Our development programme arises from the desire to provide our customers with sustainable solutions. Development process time, from product conception to market, is crucial to ensure that our solutions are both relevant and progressive.

Working closely with the senior development technologist and as part of the Technical Team, you will be responsible for maintaining the new product development program within the company, working across several projects supporting the sales team in providing technical support directly to customers, providing assistance with QC and problem-solving for production.

As a DSF Development Technologist, you will soon see the results of your efforts and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing your products being manufactured.

Job Description:

  • Develop new products and improve existing products and processes
  • Test and approve new raw materials
  • Review production data to construct product specifications
  • Plan and execute laboratory based trials
  • Organise and coordinate production trials
  • Assess product performance; post-use analysis, site visits, provide material selection recommendations
  • Compiling test certificates, technical reports, manufacturing specifications, product information, sales and marketing literature

The Person:

  • Graduate position; degree in Materials Science or similar would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of refractory or ceramics industry advantageous but not essential
  • Motivated to work independently and as part of a team when required
  • Good project management skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office programmes

Production Team Leader – Minerals

We are currently seeking a Production Team Leader for our Minerals department at our Friden, Derbyshire factory

Main Duties include:

  • Manage a team of production operatives.
  • Responsibility for achieving departmental KPI targets.
  • Carry out daily quality checks and audits ensuring that the product is produced in line with quality standards and procedures.
  • Attend daily production meetings.
  • Work with peers to offer alternative solutions to any quality, productivity, waste and safety matters.
  • Ensure compliance with the company health and safety and environmental policies and procedures – including involvement in risk assessments, safety audits, PPE adherence, incident and accident reporting whilst promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Collating and inputting data, analysing reports.
  • Coach and support team members to ensure appropriate training is received in accordance with training objectives
  • Route cause analysis and resolving any production issues based on KPI / OEE performance.
  • Planning workload and processes to meet current and future requirements.
  • Ensure there is an efficient process flow by communicating with other internal stakeholders.
  • Willingness to undertake further training / qualifications i.e. ILM Level 5, (for the right candidates) Health and Safety, Auditing, Lean, Continuous Improvement.
  • Involvement in attending disciplinary meetings and other related HR meetings, such as conducting appraisals.
  • Carrying out monthly and annual stocktakes.
  • Logistics and management of raw material storage.
  • Attending raw material meetings and working closely with procurement.
The Candidate:
  • Experience of supervising a team and a minimum Level 3 Leadership qualification or equivalent.
  • Self-aware, resilient individual, with the ability to guide and lead a team.
  • Proven proactive and positive hands-on approach, leading and delivering continuous improvements through LEAN.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook etc is essential.
  • Demonstrate an ability to drive change.
The Role:
  • 39-hour contract, with a contractual requirement to work extra hours as and when required.
  • Overtime supervision may be required.
  • In the interest of gaining experience, throughout the factory, you will be required to show flexibility by moving between departments.
  • Minerals experience would be an advantage.
  • Working closely with the Mineral Sales team and providing cover as required.
  • Responsible for the management and cover of the Weighbridge facility.
