DSF Refractories & Minerals Ltd

At DSF we pride ourselves as one of the largest employers in the heart of the Peak District. We employ about 150 people, many of which live in the local villages and towns. Over the 125 years we have seen many family generations spending their working lives at DSF through to retirement. This is reflected in our history of long service awards of 25, 40 and 50 years celebrations.

Job Description:

Working closely with the Operations Director and Works Engineer you will be involved in co-ordinating, supporting and advising on all aspects with regards to Health and Safety. To establish, manage and monitor standards, processes, communications, training and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated with Health and Safety within the Company are adhered to.

  • Ensure a safe workplace environment without risk to health.
  • Review all Health & Safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations to ensure adherence and regularly reviewed, updated and communicated.
  • Ensure the Company meets its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and welfare at work, including statutory training and reporting.
  • Ensure the completion and regular review of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for all operations.
  • Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented.
  • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, RAMS and lone working procedures are met
  • Management and control of contractors, including reviewing systems and procedures.
  • Responsible for all aspects of COSHH, including assessments, LEV Examinations, RPE requirements and personal monitoring.
  • Manage a structured programme of health & safety training throughout the Company.
  • Liaise with external health & safety consultants in the provision of training programmes and health and safety services, including delivering in-house training and tool box talks.
  • Attend health and safety meetings and formulate & distribute minutes. Assist to ensure that all agreed action points are completed within deadlines.
  • Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety & welfare at work legislation.
  • Provide regular reports to the Management Team on relevant health and safety activities.
  • Liaise with professional bodies and authorities.

Person Specification:

  • At least 3 years recent and relevant experience in a similar role.
  • NEBOSH (General Certificate) qualified or higher qualification.
  • COSHH Trained.

Thermal Process Engineer

We are currently seeking to recruit a Thermal Process Engineer.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for the kiln operations to optimise the firing and drying processes to improve production efficiency and reduce energy consumption
  • Ensure all kiln and drying processes meet current safety standards and inspections
  • Assist technical and production to help resolve firing and drying problems to minimise loss of product and production time
  • Measure the performance of the kilns, including data analysis, reports and recommendations
  • Implement and manage a ppm scheme for all kiln operations, covering natural gas and oil systems, combustion appliances, electrical and mechanical disciplines
  • Responsible for kiln operating procedures, maintaining safe systems of work, risk assessments, train and assess for competency
  • Manage energy strategies and kiln related projects working with external bodies, contractors and consultants as required
  • Co-ordinate all defined energy and emission related matters throughout the Company, introducing new policies and procedures as required
  • Available to be on call to deal with kiln operational issues out of normal working hours

Person Specification:

  • Experience in the operation of high temperature kilns or furnaces
  • Combustion and burner knowledge
  • Experience in the firing of ceramics and/or good understanding of raw material characteristics within the firing process - desirable
  • Industrial Gas Safety - desirable
  • Ideally educated to degree level within an Energy/Engineering Combustion discipline
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Must be enthusiastic and have confidence in their ability of problem solving and decision making
  • Reliable, self-motivated and flexible, including the ability to work out of normal working hours

MAINTENANCE FITTER (Immediate start available)

We are currently seeking to recruit a Maintenance Fitter. The successful candidate will be a key member of the engineering team.
